Overview

About the Destination:

The high altitude trip will easily take up around ten days by cycle. But you would be welcomed in a grand way by the precious sights on all sides- from the ethereal greenery to the silent mountain slopes and the journey is unparalleled for many reasons.

The precarious roads have enough adventure to make each road trip memorable. The avalanche filled mountains and the narrow gorges will accompany you till Leh and after that as well. Bravery in your becomes predominant on this journey of conquering the rock filled pathways going up the hills, the challenging steeps and descents with all patience you have got and remember determination is the key to the successful completion of this route stretching up to 500 kilometers in total.

On the way from Manali to Leh, you may find different mountain passes and five are major ones in the stretch. All of them are standing tall at a height of about 13000 to 18000 feet above sea level. Rohtang, Tanglang, Naki, Lachalung and Baralacha are the main high altitude passes you come across during the road trip and they are almost dizzying and dangerous. Negotiating with them on your cycles won’t be as easy as you imagine.

Advisory

    7
  • Be sure to have two nutrition halts during the cycling course everyday.
  • 7
  • Please note that Riders must bring their own mountain (all terrain) cycles. The roads generally are not suitable for bikes fitted with road tyres (slicks), even though some sections are in reasonably good condition. There will be sections higher up that will be in poor condition due to snow/slush from the winter months, possible landslip, and use of the road by heavy vehicles at times. Hybrid bikes with 'chunky' mountain tyres are most suitable. Riders should also bring a range of spare parts which may include; chain links or chains, spare tyres and pump, at least 4 spare tubes and puncture repair kit, cables, pedals and a good tool kit.
  • 7
  • Though there would be a mechanic accompanying you carrying a good repair kit and spares but it is still necessary for everyone to bring some spares; this also ensures you have parts that will fit your bike. There will be a staff member to assist with running repairs when we are biking and at overnight stops should problems be more complicated. As a general rule, less complex or high tech bikes are easier to fix and obtain parts for if necessary. If you plan to buy a new bike before the trip, make sure you are completely familiar with it prior to departing.
  • 7
  • You should fit at least 2 one litre water bottles to your bike. Water will be available from the back up vehicle.
  • 7
  • For riders unfamiliar with the Himalayan organization you will be very well catered for. The cycling expedition takes you into remote regions where there are no villages and no hotels. Therefore during the cycling expedition you will be camping.
  • 7
  • Early morning starts and descents at altitude require good quality weather gear.
  • 7
  • Proper waste disposal and strictly follow the ‘Leave No Trace’ guideline.
  • 7
  • Respect local cultures and be sensitive towards nature and wildlife.
  • 7
  • Use local resources and support including provisions and porters to generate local employment.
  • 7
  • Those suffering from an ailment or heart disease, Diabetes, breathing problems, high altitude sickness or is pregnant cannot participate.
  • 7
  • Good quality warm apparels are a must.
  • 7
  • If you wish to travel by road from Delhi to Manali and return, there are regular Volvos from Delhi to Manali. There are frequent Public Transport buses including Volvos available from Delhi to Manali that cost about Rs. 1300 per person.

This particular package of Manali to Leh cycling trip was an excellent package with complete value for the money I spent. The glimpses of all the beautiful places there have come back with mehome. We started the trip from Manali and few other people joined the group. The route from Manali to Leh was brilliant and in between there were small stream and I saw the beautiful Chandra and Bhaga River on the way. I passed all the famous passes Rohtang, Baralacha La, Khardung La, Tanglang La, Changlang La and rest of the names I can’t remember. Camping at Sarchu, Nubra and Pangong Tso was nice except the availability of toilets. Stargazing at Pangong Tso at night was dream like experience.

I am a corporate employee from Delhi and this was a break away from my office works. I love solo travelling so I decided to join this cycling trip from Manali to Leh. Glad that I have done something adventurous in my life. Ladakh is a beautiful place and cycling through the hilly areas was superb. I really loved this ride. I can recommend this trip without any doubt to anyone out there and it was the greatest place I have ever been to. One thing which was not that great was tented accommodation. I did not like them at all especially at Nubra. I was sharing the tent with two other people and they were talking the whole night and my sleep was disturbed. Also the toilet was only one and I had to wait for long to use it. But I think Ladakh is worthy of taking some risks.
